Tri-City Health Center (TCHC) held its first Annual Community Awards and Fundraising Breakfast event on Friday, August 16th, from 7am to 9am at the Fremont Marriott hotel in honor of National Health Center Week (NHCW) 2013. The event was hosted by Terry McSweeney of NBC Bay Area News as the Master of Ceremonies, and was graced by a turnout of nearly 200 attendees, including elected officials, local business establishments, community members, other health centers from the Community Health Center Network, and TCHC patients and their families.

TCHC’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Zettie Page, III, along with two of TCHC’s very own staff members – Alejandro Lopez and Lucy Chou – kicked off the show and wowed guests with a live demonstration of the agency’s ability to serve its patient population of over 23,000 patients in over 19 different languages. Dr. Page, Alejandro, and Lucy delivered a powerful message about the importance of the nation’s health centers and TCHC’s continuing endeavor to become the premier health home in City of Fremont in Mandarin, Spanish, and English.

Dr. Zettie Page said, “Tri-City is proud to be a leader of community based health care in the native languages of the people we serve. Our commitment to growth with the needs, become more efficient, and drive the cost of health care down has drawn support from our political leaders, business leaders, Community Health Center Network, and TCHC patients and their families.  It is an honor to have the City of Fremont to declare by proclamation that August 16th was TCHC day.  It’s a symbol of the critical impact that TCHC has on the health and well-being of our community.”

Guests enjoyed a hot plate breakfast while viewing a video welcome from the Mayor of the City of Fremont, Bill Harrison, who also presented a resolution to TCHC declaring August 16th as Tri-City Health Center Day. Senate Majority Leader Ellen Corbett and Congressman Mike Honda also made it to the stage emphasizing the integral role TCHC plays in the community. Senate Majority Leader Corbett presented TCHC a second resolution observing National Health Center Week and what that truly entails in light of the current changes with health care reform.

TCHC’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Joyce Nuesca, continued the festivities presenting three exemplary patients with the Patient of the Year 2013 Award for demonstrating outstanding management of their health. Touching patient video testimonials presenting experiences of each awardee brought tears and motivated the attendees to continue their ongoing support for TCHC’s mission.

Following the awards ceremony, Dr. Page presented the Health Center Advocate Award to Assemblymember Bob Wieckowski in observance of his commitment to public health care and continuous efforts towards improving community health programs. Assemblymember Bob Wieckowski accepted the award and said, “The services provided by local healthcare facilities, such as the Tri-City Health Center, are critical to maintaining access to affordable care.  I am proud to stand with TCHC in the struggle to ensure more Californians receive the care and treatment they need.”  Bob delivered a compelling message, encouraging the audience to join in the fight to support the work of health centers, especially with the changing landscape.

TCHC’s Board Chair, Kim Douglas, and Terry McSweeney closed the event by thanking the attendees and extending special thanks to the sponsors. Last but not least, Mrs. Douglas engaged guests in an exciting raffle draw and the announcement of the silent auction winners.

Overall, TCHC’s First Annual Community Awards and Fundraising Breakfast Event was a huge success. TCHC raised over $87,000 towards improving the agency’s current priority areas: cancer screening program, health information technology, and patient experience. TCHC leadership team and staff were thrilled with the overwhelming community support shown at the event. TCHC looks forward to partnering with the community and to continue being the community’s preferred health home in the City of Fremont!
